The Bunch Family: We Were Praying for Help, and Sunshine Answered
Before Sunshine Gospel Ministries, Brenda Bunch knew something in her family needed to change, but she didn’t yet know how.
“My family life prior to becoming a part of Sunshine was filled with numerous challenges,” she shares. “Being a firm believer in my faith and family, I found myself falling short, not being a positive and effective communicator. I often felt overwhelmed and disappointed in myself for falling short with my husband and daughter.”
In trying to keep the peace, Brenda began to withdraw. “I was focusing on trying to please others by keeping the peace through withdrawing and being ready to check out of my marriage.” Still, she prayed. “I was leaning on my faith for guidance, praying constantly to receive help in restoring and retaining my family.”
Her husband, Randall Bunch, felt the strain too. “My family life before Sunshine was like a seek and search for answers on how to be a better husband and father,” he explains, “as well as becoming a better steward and servant for God.”
That search led them to Familyhood, Sunshine Gospel Ministries’ family-strengthening program that brings parents and children together through faith-based classes, shared meals, therapy access, and consistent relational support so families don’t have to navigate challenges alone.
Brenda’s entry point was a simple invitation to a Sunshine class. She prayed, did her research, and soon received a call from Sasha Simmons, SGM Managing Director of Programs.
“Her kind, soft-spoken voice asked if I had any questions,” Brenda recalls. “Next, she asked if she could pray for and with me.” That moment mattered.
Brenda’s first Familyhood experience was Raising Highly Capable Kids, a parenting cohort that blends practical tools with prayer and reflection. “Although I’ve taken other developmental classes in the past, this class was different,” she says. “It started and concluded with prayer.” Even during the pandemic, sitting behind a computer screen, Brenda felt something shift. “I was grateful, Jehovah was answering my prayers.”
Familyhood encourages families to walk the journey together, so Brenda brought what she learned home. “I always tried to encourage my husband to sign up for a class,” she says. When Sunshine resumed Family.Activities.Meals (F.A.M.) Night, a space where families share meals, conversations, games, and faith-based activities, Brenda invited both Randall and their daughter to attend together. “Needless to say,” she adds, “they have been attending FAM since then.”
Randall remembers that decision clearly. “My wife had been to a few meetings with Sunshine and suggested that I should come to the next meeting,” he says. “I saw how enthusiastic she was with the program. I decided to give it a try.” What followed surprised him. “SGM has turned out to be a major positive boost to how I now interact with married life.”
A turning point came through Familyhood’s mental health support. During a Sunshine healthcare symposium, individual counseling was offered at no cost. Brenda remembers Randall saying he would attend therapy if it weren’t so expensive. After hearing Dr. Jasmine Seely, one of our mental health support consultants, speak, “he signed up immediately.”
Over time, real change took root. “I’ve noticed positive changes in how we communicate with each other,” Brenda says. “Not over-talking, but listening.” She noticed she was no longer withdrawing. “By attending classes offered by SGM, we are participating together more.”
Randall felt it too. “I’ve learned to listen more patiently,” he says, “and to speak in a way that offers peace and abundance.”
For Brenda, the growth was also personal. “I’ve regained my voice,” she shares. “My outlook on life has improved spiritually, mentally, physically, and I’ve gained financial literacy.” She’s learning to care for herself and show up more fully for her family.
Their daughter found her place as well, through F.A.M. Nights, conversations, and relationships with staff who listened and understood. “She eagerly participated,” Brenda says. “She’s heard. She’s supported.” Seeing her daughter smiling and laughing with staff has been priceless.
Today, their home feels different, not perfect, but grounded. “In spite of life’s challenges,” Brenda says, “gratitude is the attitude of our days.”
When asked what she wants donors to know, her answer is simple. “Thank you. Your generosity and support have blessed my family beyond measure.” When life felt overwhelming, she says, “SGM offered hope, encouragement, prayers, and real support.”
Through Familyhood workshop classes, therapy, shared meals, and consistent care, the Bunch family found what they were praying for: support, strength, and a way forward together.
